Chapter 12

She had no idea how to tell her mother. "I got a job," Idonia lied. "One of the modeling gigs. They want me semi permanently, so I'm gonna be here a few more weeks."

Ida Mae didn't say anything for a long enough beat to make her daughter grow antsy. Finally, she said, "Well, what about school?"

"I'll come back to school, mama. I promise. I might have to take a semester off, but it's a chance of a lifetime."

"As I recall, that's what you said about this trip, but you said it was only for a week."

"I know but..."

"Idonia Sevinae, what's really going on out there? Is it that boy?" Ida asked. Her tone dripped with suspicion, and Idonia knew her mother saw right through the subterfuge. There was no lying to Ida Mae Carter.

She sat back on the bed she had made love to Alton in, feeling ashamed to have to tell her mother that she was staying for some man, but what else could she say? "I love him, mama."

"Idonia," Ida Mae sounded like she wanted to cry. "I told you, baby. We told you. You can't trust men like him. He's a celebrity, baby."

"He's not like what you think, mama. I can't wait for you to meet him. He cares about me, too. I know he does. Mama, I can't leave. I'm not leaving."

She heard the phone click as her mother disconnected. "Mama?" Idonia said in surprise. "Hello?" The dial tone started to buzz, letting her know for sure her mother had hung up on her.

Idonia sadly sank back into the pillows and covered her face as the tears began to fall. She had never ever intended to embarrass her mother or disappoint her, but it couldn't be helped. As the tears soaked into the downy pillow, she felt like she was grieving for a loss...the loss of the person she used to be. She had to become someone else, Idonia was aware. That old country girl from Mississippi wouldn't survive out here.

When they had awakened, before Alton left the hotel room, he made it clear she wasn't to leave. He would be checking her out as soon as he had the penthouse ready for her arrival. Alton assured her that staying at the place he shared with his brother was temporary. He would get her an apartment of her own. In the meantime, he told her to check with the agents who had been interested in representing her.

So Idonia quietly had herself a good cry before getting up and shedding her old self completely. By the time she picked up her cellphone to place the important calls, she felt like she was on her way to being the woman in the pictures she had posted to her Twitter and Instagram, the pictures that had already been shared thousands of times.

"May I speak with Harris Olston, please," she said.

"Oh, I'm sorry. He's busy at the moment. I can take a message, if you'd like."

"This is Idonia Carter."
